THE RECOMMERCE 100 TURNS 1!
When we launched the Recommerce 100 a year ago, we had no idea just how quickly the number of retailers with resale programs would skyrocket. Well, we had an idea…we did name it the Recommerce 100 even though we only had 41 brands on the list.
If thredUP’s Resale-as-a-Service had a theme for 2022, it would be explosive growth. 2022 was our biggest year ever, from the number of new clients we signed, to our growing internal team. We broadened the reach of resale in fashion by bringing new innovative resale programs to more brands and more US shoppers than ever before. Read on for a peek into what RaaS was up to in 2022!
thredUP is thrilled to add Torrid, the #1 brand in the $85B U.S. women’s plus-size apparel and intimates market, to our ever-expanding portfolio of Resale-as-a-Service (RaaS) clients. With less than 20% of eco-conscious brands catering to above-average sizes, size-inclusivity has been historically left out of the sustainable fashion space. Until now!
Circularity has more to celebrate today! We are proud to announce that thredUP has just expanded our partnership with beloved brand Vera Bradley to launch a resale shop: Vera Bradley Forever Favorites. Vera Bradley and thredUP’s RaaS have been working together since 2021 when the brand debuted its first-ever Clean Out Program. We are thrilled to support Vera Bradley as they close the loop on circularity by enabling customers to easily shop gently used Vera Bradley favorites from the brand’s own e-commerce site.
We’ve got exciting launch news! We've partnered with two sustainably-minded brands: OAK + FORT and OZMA (OZMA of California). Aside from being personal faves of a few RaaS team members, we’re thrilled that both woman-founded companies embody a philosophy of creating conscious, thoughtful designs and a less-is-more approach when it comes to building a wardrobe that’s made to last.
In 2011, two years after the launch of online resale marketplace thredUP, the company introduced its signature (and 100% free to customers) Clean Out Kits. The goal? Unlock a massive supply of quality clothes from consumers’ closets by providing the world’s easiest solution to selling used clothes—all while inspiring a new generation to keep clothing in circulation and out of landfill.
With consumers looking to stretch their dollar further or wanting to make more sustainable shopping choices, the
demand for secondhand fashion shows no signs of slowing. And now fashion brands and retailers reselling their own secondhand apparel (referred to as branded resale or recommerce) is on the rise. While online resale has been historically driven by marketplaces like thredUP, The RealReal, and Poshmark, brands and retailers are now set to lead the next wave of secondhand. According to the Recommerce 100, there are 90 brands with online resale shops, 54 of which launched in 2022.
In the world of fashion resale, 2022 is shaping up to be a year like no other. Resale is expected to grow 11 times faster than the broader retail clothing sector by 2025. With 1 in 3 retail executives saying resale is becoming table stakes for retailers*, it's no surprise the words ‘resale’ and ‘recommerce’ are showing up in retail headlines everywhere.
