The Recommerce 100 Turns 1!
When we launched the Recommerce 100 a year ago, we had no idea just how quickly the number of retailers with resale programs would skyrocket. Well, we had an idea…we did name it the Recommence 100 even though we only had 41 brands on the list. Today, we’re proud to announce that there are over 128 brands with dedicated resale shops—a year-to-date growth rate of 212%. That’s over 3.4X!
The Recommerce 100 is thredUP’s monthly independent review of brand recommerce, ranking brands and retailers who have dedicated resale programs by how many secondhand items they have listed at time of publish. We track and update it every month, highlighting new entrants into the space, the type of resale model used (managed or peer-to-peer), and year-to-date growth.
A few exciting highlights:
2022 was a record year for retailers launching branded resale reprograms. We’ve had 96 brands enter resale in the last 12 months alone. Based on the 2022 growth rate, we can expect to see 143 new brands with a resale shop by the end of 2023. We’ve already seen lots of momentum (10+ launches!) in the new year.
Big beloved brands are embracing resale and committing to circularity. thredUP’s Resale-a-as-Service supported the launch of Kate Spade Pre-Loved and J.Crew Always in 2023 and they have quickly become leaders in the resale space landing in the top 15. We’re thrilled to be announcing more exciting new clients soon.
The managed service model is the preferred choice for resale shops at scale. 9 out of the top 10 resale shops use a managed service model. The peer-to-peer model powers the highest number of shops, but managed service models are 10X bigger in volume than peer-to-peer. The average number of resale listings on managed service resale shops is over 4400.
We can’t wait to see what the future holds, as we continue to see brands and retailers prioritize sustainable solutions to the fashion waste crisis.
Resale-as-a-Service is thredUP’s B2B platform that enables leading brands and retailers to deliver custom, scalable resale experiences to their customers.
Note on methodology: The Recommerce 100 compiles publicly available information to identify fashion brands selling their own pre-owned products online to US shoppers. See the full methodology.
